Caving Tours in Sri Lanka

Caving, sometimes called Spelunking, is the recreational sport of exploring caves. Sri Lanka has not been blessed with many caves to explore, but the few that we do are of great interest for anthropological, historical, geological or zoological reasons:

The Pannila cave offers the chance to see an underground zoo, including bats (of course!), fish, reptiles, and amphibians. Skeletal remains of the prehistoric “Balangoda Man” were found in Belilena and Batadombalena caves.

Waulpane is home not only to thousands of bats which give it its name (Wavula is Sinhalese for bat) but also to stalactites and stalagmites dated as 500 million years old. And there are many caves where various kings of Sri Lanka have taken refuge in from time to time to escape their enemies.

Protective clothing and helmets with lights are provided for all caving expeditions.
