Fish has always been an important part of the Sri Lankan diet – whether fresh-water from the numerous rivers and lakes criss-crossing the isle, or sea-water from the bountiful ocean surrounding. Fishing is a key industry in the economy, and provides a livelihood for many – especially the fishing communities on the coast. (If you would like to participate in fishing the traditional Sri Lankan way – for example, stilt fishing - please see Agro Tourism)
Sri Lanka is becoming increasingly popular as a recreational fishing destination – either for the challenge of landing as big a catch as possible (catch-and-return, or for food or sale), or just to relax by a river bank or sea shore while waiting for a nibble, which will be duly cooked to your taste. The duration ranges from a few hours (as part of a larger adventure itinerary) to multi-day.
Given that you are never truly far from a river wherever you are in Sri Lanka, inland fishing can be arranged around almost any tour itinerary, and is a suitable year-round activity. The thrill of a deep-sea fishing is of course a seasonal activity: for fishing in November to April the Western and Southern coasts are more suitable, while from May to September the Eastern coast is the place to be.
As recreational fishing is not yet a popular local practice, the services of a professional company – especially a fishing guide – is essential for an enjoyable fishing trip with a good catch at the end of the day.
Sri Lanka Adventures provides all necessary equipment, including boats, fishing rods or lines (depending on whether you prefer to use a rod, or to troll), tackle, and bait – although you are welcome to bring your own if you wish. Life jackets are provided and are compulsory
