Some of the best experiences in Sri Lanka are only available on a hiking tour – an unrivalled opportunity to get up, close and personal with nature! Trekking options include gentle half-day routes in open areas, to longer, more demanding, hikes in forests, natural parks and mountains. Multi-day excursions include accommodation in tents or guesthouses.
Sri Lanka Adventures can arrange treks of any grade, and incorporate any key sights you wish to see, or you can select from our most popular options:
- Inside the Cultural Triangle, encompassing ancient irrigation systems and the uninhabited jungles of the dry zone.
- Hiking up Adam’s Peak – night climb recommended so you can catch the surreal sunrise from the peak, rising above the clouds. Or you can trek in the Peak Wilderness Sanctuary nearby and sample the wildlife including deer, jackal and – if you’re lucky – leopards.
- In the Horton Plains National Park – explore the beautiful scenery, take a refreshing dip at Baker’s Falls, and peer over the aptly named World’s End precipice at the town of Balangoda, 1050m below you. You could drive up to the park entrance, or for the added experience, travel on the night train from Colombo and trek to the park from Ohiya (easy) or Belihul-Oya (harder) railway station.
- Conquer the Knuckle’s range (a series of mountains that resemble the knuckles of a hand) rising some 1800m above the Dumbara Valley. This region incorporates 5 major forest formations, with rare and endemic fauna and flora complementing the amazing scenery. As this is a protected area, permission needs to be arranged in advance.
- Explore the Sinharaja rainforest – home to more than half of Sri Lanka’s endemic butterflies and mammals, as well as many kinds of insects, reptiles and rare amphibians.. Don’t miss out on Sri Lanka’s largest tree and the carnivorous bandura plants!
Hiking/Trekking is possible all year round, although it would be wise to avoid the monsoon rains (May to July in the West, South and Central areas; December to January in the North, North-Central and East) and the leeches that come with them. |
