Wedding & Honeymoon Packages

Sri Lanka is proving to be a popular choice for destination weddings – offering not only a selection of romantic locations, from pristine white beaches and waterfalls to mist-covered rolling hillsides and lush tropical forest; but also a rich tapestry of multi-cultural wedding traditions to make your special day truly unforgettable. Coupled with a honeymoon to some of the most seductive get-aways in the world, this is surely a unique and memorable way to experience this paradise isle!

As a dwelling for several diverse ethnic communities, Sri Lanka provides a selection of cultural traditions and customs that can add color, charm and “spice” to your wedding. For starters, you could select the elaborate Kandyan style wedding attire, although some prefer a simpler wardrobe. Western clothes are also fine, but make sure they are suitable for the heat and humidity, unless you are getting married in the cooler hill climate.

A traditional Buddhist wedding will include the couple being escorted in a procession of drummers and dancers to the venue of the ceremony - a wooden platform known as the poruwa. The couple ascends the platform accompanied by the blowing of the hakgedi (conch shell), where a master of ceremonies will take them through the traditional stages – exchanging of not only vows, but a sheaf of betel leaves 7 times to signify the bond lasting for 7 generations; tying the pinky fingers of the couple with a golden thread and pouring water over it; and feeding each other with kiribath (milk rice) as a pledge to take care of each other. Young girls sing Jayamangala Gatha (Stanzas of Victory) to invoke blessings on the new couple. Although not really a traditional aspect of the wedding, the couple “going away” on elephant back has proved a popular tourist attraction.

You could also draw from other local traditions – for example, in a Hindu wedding, the couple is blessed by a priest and then showered in rice by their guests, which symbolizes happiness, prosperity and fertility – and of course your own; for example, champagne is a popular fusion element.

At Sri Lanka Adventures, we take care of all logistics, including guiding you on legal requirements and preparations – so you have the peace of mind to enjoy your special day to the fullest.
